Editorial policy
How we research, write, review, and update every calculator on Numora. Last updated April 2026.
The four-stage workflow
Every calculator we publish goes through the same four stages before going live, and the same cadence after.
- Research. An author identifies the head query, surveys the authoritative sources (regulatory bodies, peer-reviewed studies, standards organizations), and writes a draft against our master template. Sources are listed in
learn.sourcesand visible to readers. - Math validation. The calculator's formulas are validated by our engine at save time โ no calculator with a malformed formula or failing test case can be published. Critical test cases must pass before deploy.
- Expert review. Calculators marked YMYL (your-money-your-life โ finance, health, legal, tax) are reviewed by a credentialed expert before publication. The reviewer's name and credentials appear on the page; their public profile includes external verification links (LinkedIn, ORCID, university page, etc.).
- Editorial pass. A second editor reads the page for plain English, checks every cited source resolves, and verifies the worked examples against the live calculator output.
Source standards
Every numeric assumption โ tax brackets, interest rates, body-mass cutoffs, cooking temperatures, conversion factors โ must trace to a primary source. We prefer, in order:
- Standards bodies and regulators (ISO, BIPM, IRS, CFPB, USDA, WHO, NIST).
- Peer-reviewed academic literature.
- National statistical agencies (BLS, ONS, Eurostat, World Bank).
- Industry consensus references (e.g. Freddie Mac PMMS for mortgage rates, Experian Q'ly auto-finance reports).
Blog posts, marketing pages, and AI-generated summaries are not used as primary sources. If a source we cited later changes its position, we update the calculator and add a changelog entry visible to readers.
Reviewer credentials
Reviewers must hold a publicly verifiable credential relevant to the calculator's domain โ for example:
- Finance โ CFA, CFP, CPA, attorney admitted to a US bar, FCA-authorized adviser.
- Health & nutrition โ MD, DO, RD/RDN, RN, PT, ACSM-certified clinical exercise physiologist.
- Construction & engineering โ PE, RA, NCARB-certified, ASME / ASCE professional member.
- Tax โ CPA, EA (enrolled agent), attorney with a tax LLM.
Each reviewer's page lists their full credentials, the calculators they've signed off on, and at least one external profile we used to verify identity (e.g. LinkedIn, ORCID, state licensing board).
Update cadence
YMYL calculators are re-reviewed every six months. Non-YMYL calculators are re-reviewed every twelve months. The next-review date appears on every page. Source-data changes (new tax year, updated WHO guidance, refreshed average rates) trigger an immediate update, not a scheduled one.
When we update a calculator, the version number on the page increments and a changelog entry summarizes what changed. Past versions are not preserved โ the published version always reflects the current state of the underlying source data.
Corrections
If you spot a math error, a stale source, or a misleading explanation, email corrections@numora.net with the page URL and what you believe is wrong. Verified errors are corrected within 48 hours; the changelog entry credits the report (with your permission).
Independence
Numora does not accept payment to feature, recommend, or rank any product or service. We have no advertising, no affiliate links, and no sponsored content in the calculators themselves. The blog occasionally cites third-party tools by name when relevant; those mentions are editorial and never paid.
Conflicts of interest
Reviewers disclose any active employment, advisory, or board relationship with a company in the calculator's domain. Disclosures appear on the reviewer's public profile. Reviewers do not review calculators in domains where they hold a financial interest in a specific outcome.
AI use
We use large language models to draft initial copy and to spot gaps in our calculators' long-tail content. Every published page is read end-to-end by a human editor; no calculator goes live with unedited model output. Numeric assumptions, formulas, and source citations are always entered or verified by a human, never copied from a model.
