U.S. sales tax varies by state, county, and city. Check the exact combined rate for the purchase location โ online rates often default to billing address.
A sales tax calculator adds a tax rate to a pre-tax price and returns the final amount you'll pay at checkout. The math is a single multiplication and addition, but the rate itself depends on your state, county, city, and in some cases the type of product being sold.
This sales tax calculator helps you quickly determine the total cost of a purchase, including the exact sales tax amount, by factoring in both the item's pre-tax price and the applicable sales tax rate. Sales tax rates in the U.S. are complex, varying significantly by state, county, and even city, with some states having no sales tax at all. For online purchases, the rate is typically based on your shipping address. This tool is ideal for budgeting, comparing prices across different locations, or simply verifying the tax on a receipt, ensuring you understand the full financial impact of your purchases.
What is a sales tax?
Use this sales tax calculator to compute the tax amount and the total after-tax price for any purchase. Enter the pre-tax price and your local sales tax rate โ we calculate the dollar tax, the after-tax total, and the reverse calculation (back out the pre-tax amount from a tax-inclusive total). Sales tax rates vary by state, county, and city โ check your local tax authority for the exact combined rate, since US sales tax is a state and local tax not a federal one.

Worked examples
1A $100 item in New York City
At NYC's 8.875% combined rate, a $100 item costs $108.88 at checkout โ $8.88 of which is tax. The state takes $4, the city and transit district take the rest.
2A $1,000 purchase in Oregon
Oregon has no state or local sales tax, so a $1,000 item costs exactly $1,000. This is one reason residents of bordering states make larger purchases in Oregon โ though technically you owe use tax to your home state on cross-border buys.
3A $500 appliance in a 8% combined tax area
For a $500 appliance with an 8% combined sales tax rate (e.g., 6.5% state + 1.5% local), the tax amount would be $40.00, making the total purchase price $540.00.

Common mistakes and edge cases
Using your state's base rate and forgetting the local addition. New York State is 4%; New York City's combined rate is 8.875%. The gap is $4.88 on a $100 purchase.
Assuming all items taxed at the same rate. Most states tax prepared food, clothing, and medicine differently from general merchandise. An online cart mixing categories may apply different rates per line.
Applying sales tax to the price after a percentage discount. The order matters: tax is almost always calculated on the post-discount price, not the original sticker. If the calculator shows a different number than the receipt, check which base the retailer used.

Methodology
Sales tax in the United States is layered. States set a base rate (0% to about 7%), counties often add 0.25โ2%, and cities may add another 1โ4%. Your effective rate is the sum. Five states charge no state sales tax at all: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon โ though Alaska allows local sales tax.
